Wind Uplift and Fastening: How LWIC Roofs Hold On

A roof survives a windstorm as an assembly, not as a list of good materials. Uplift resistance comes from the load path: membrane to attachment, attachment to substrate, substrate to structure. In an LWIC system, the critical link is the base sheet fastener — a purpose-made anchor driven into the cured concrete, engaging it across the whole field of the roof.

Fastening into LWIC is a subject close to my work: I am a co-inventor on US Patent 7,299,598 B2, a fastener design born from years of watching what holds and what lets go. This guide is about the principles, which apply regardless of whose hardware is on the roof.

04.1How attachment works in LWIC

After the LWIC deck cures, a roofing base sheet is laid over the surface and mechanically fastened into the concrete on a specified pattern. LWIC fasteners are not screws borrowed from another system; they are designed for a low-density cementitious substrate — configured to spread load into the material and resist withdrawal from a matrix much softer than structural concrete. The membrane system is then built on the anchored base sheet.

The result is field-wide attachment: thousands of engagement points distributed across the roof, rather than attachment concentrated at seams or relying on adhesion alone. Fastener type, length, and pattern come from the tested assembly, with tighter patterns in the perimeter and corner zones where design pressures are highest.

04.2Withdrawal resistance is verified, not assumed

Because LWIC is cast on site, its as-built properties matter more than a catalog value. Good practice — and many approvals — call for field withdrawal testing: pulling installed fasteners from the actual cured deck and confirming resistance values meet the assembly requirement before the roof goes on. It is a simple, cheap verification step that turns “should hold” into “measured.”

This is a discipline point worth generalizing: wherever a roof system depends on site-executed work — a pour, a weld, an embedment — the professional move is to test the site work, not the brochure.

04.3Ratings belong to assemblies

Wind uplift classifications — FM ratings, Miami-Dade Notices of Acceptance, Florida product approvals — attach to specific tested assemblies: this deck, this LWIC system, this fastener, this pattern, this membrane. Substituting any component means the rating no longer describes the roof. High-rated LWIC assemblies are well established, including for South Florida’s High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, but the engineering obligation is always the same: calculate the building’s design pressures, zone by zone, and select an assembly whose tested rating covers them.

04.4Why storms keep proving the point

Post-storm investigations repeat the same findings across system types: failures start at edges and corners, at details, and at attachment shortcuts — not usually in the field of a properly anchored roof. The virtues of a well-executed LWIC system in wind are unglamorous ones: massive redundancy of attachment points, a monolithic substrate with no boards to peel at joints, and a deck that stays put while the storm works on the details. None of that substitutes for getting the details right; it just means the field of the roof is not the weak link.
